A lot of fightwear is made cheap. You find that out the hard way.
The gi that looked fine online starts falling apart before you earn your next stripe. The seams loosen. The fit goes sloppy after a few washes.
That frustration is where Stonebelt started. We are a Canadian BJJ brand, family-run, built by people who train.
If you train in Canada, the problem is worse. Most of what you find ships from out of country, lands with surprise duties, and comes with heavy shipping cost.
This is the story of why we exist, what our name means, and what makes our gear different. Two questions we get at almost every event. Here are the honest answers.
What Stonebelt Means
In jiu-jitsu, a belt is not just a rank. It is a record of who you have become.
The name Stonebelt comes from one idea. Every belt is shaped under pressure, hardened by discipline, and earned through consistency. Like stone, it is not given or shape by coincidence. It is formed. And like stone, the character you build on the mats endures hardship and storms with renewed strength.
That is not a slogan to us. It is the standard we build to.
It is also why our motto is simple. Forged under pressure. Worn with honor. The gear should reflect the work behind it.
Why We Started
Stonebelt was not born because the world needed another kimono brand.
It started in our home.
I train. I also work a full-time job and come home to a family with kids who train. Stonebelt was never a venture capital play or a marketing exercise. It was built by people who live the same way most practitioners do. Early mornings, long days and late evenings on the mats. The quiet discipline of showing up when no one is watching.
My wife runs the design side. She has spent close to twenty years as a graphic designer, and she brings that eye to every piece we make. That is not a small detail. It is the reason our gear looks restrained instead of loud, and why the fit and the lines are deliberate instead of borrowed. Most of the brands you scroll past online have no one like that behind them. We do, and she sits at our kitchen table.
As we got deeper into it, we noticed something. Much of the gear in the market was being built for trends instead of training. New graphics every few months. Loud designs. Production shortcuts to protect margins.
So we made decisions that slowed us down but protected the product. We rejected samples that were not right. We specified our own fabric weight and composition. Work tirelessly to find truly good quality production. We kept the cut traditional and predictable. We chose embroidery over cheaper alternatives. We gave up better margins to protect the integrity of the gear.
Not because it looked impressive. Because it was the right way to build something that is meant to last.
You can read more of that story on our About Stonebelt page.
What Makes the Heritage Gi Different
This is the other question we hear most. Fair question. Here is the straight answer.
The difference is in the construction, not the marketing. At the end of the day, a Gi is a Gi and those who use fancy trademark words are mainly trowing fairydust in the air. What makes a Gi truly special is the attention to the fundementals.
The Heritage BJJ Gi uses a 450 GSM pearl weave jacket. Heavy enough to hold its structure under hard grips. Light enough to move. The pants are 10 oz ripstop, built to resist tears through scrambles and guard work without restricting movement.
The fabric is a 70/30 cotton-poly blend, and that choice matters. It shrinks less than pure cotton, dries faster, and holds its fit through years of washing and its more sturdy than a old diesel truck. Your sizing stays consistent instead of drifting after the first few cycles.
Everywhere it counts, the stitching is reinforced. Collar, sleeve openings, hem, crotch seam, knee panels. Those are the points that take real force when you train hard, and they are the first to fail on a cheap gi. The lapel is EVA foam, so it holds its shape and resists grips over time.
Clean design. No loud patches. No unnecessary branding. Just disciplined construction.
If you want the full breakdown of what separates a quality gi from the rest, we wrote a complete guide on what makes a good BJJ gi. The Heritage Gi was built to that exact standard.
Why a Canadian BJJ Brand Matters
If you train in Canada, buying from a Canadian BJJ brand solves real problems.
No surprise duties at the door. No two month wait from overseas shipping. No dealing with a faceless dropship store when you need an exchange. We hold inventory in small batches and ship from within Canada, so your gear arrives fast.
And when you email us, you are not reaching a call center. You are reaching the family that made the gear. That is the part a big distributor cannot offer you, and it is what a small Canadian BJJ brand is built to do
Small batches keep us accountable too. We are not a corporation backed by investors. Every release is inspected, refined, and held to the same standard we train with. We would rather build slowly and correctly than scale fast and dilute what we stand for.
Who is Stonebelt For?
As a Canadian BJJ brand, we built this for the practitioner who is tired of replacing gear that was never built to last.
For the beginner who wants to start right and not waste money on hype. For the experienced grappler who has been burned by overhyped brands and just wants gear that works. For the practitioner who sees jiu-jitsu as part of who they are, and wants equipment that reflects the same standards they hold themselves to.
We are a family that trains. We built this for the people who train like we do. If progress for you is measured in years, not seasons, this was made for you.
The Bottom Line
Stonebelt is a Canadian BJJ brand built on a simple belief. The fundamentals still matter.
We do not chase trends. We do not cut corners to protect margin. We build gear that performs round after round, year after year, because that is what the journey deserves.
If that is the standard you train to, start with the Heritage BJJ Gi or explore the full Stonebelt collection.
Forged under pressure. Worn with honor.
