How to Wash a BJJ Gi, Without Shrinking or Ruining It

Knowing how to wash a BJJ gi properly is one of the first things every new practitioner needs to learn — and one of the most commonly gotten wrong. Heat shrinks gi fabric. Skipping washes after training creates odour that doesn’t come out. Washing with the wrong load accelerates wear. This guide covers everything you need to keep your gi clean, fresh, and lasting for years.

Why Gear Care Matters More in BJJ Than Any Other Sport

BJJ is a contact sport. You’re on the mat for an hour, pressed against training partners, sweating through every round. Your gi absorbs all of it, sweat, bacteria, skin cells. Unlike a t-shirt you wore to the grocery store, you cannot wear your gi a second time without washing it. No exceptions.

This isn’t about being the hygiene police. It’s about respecting your training partners and protecting your investment. A well-maintained gi lasts years. A neglected one falls apart — and makes enemies on the mat.

The Most Common Mistake: Heat

Most new practitioners ruin their gi the same way, they wash it in warm water and throw it in the dryer.

Here’s what happens: cotton fabrics react to heat by contracting. Tumble drying a gi, especially on a warm or hot setting, will shrink it. Sometimes significantly. Depending on how much pre-shrinking was done during manufacturing and the fabric composition, you could drop a full size after just a few cycles.

The trick works in reverse too — if your gi is running slightly large, a controlled warm wash and low-heat dry can bring it in. But this requires knowing exactly what you’re doing, and most beginners find out the hard way that they’ve gone too far.

The Golden rule is simple: cold wash, air dry. Every time.

For the Heritage BJJ Gi specifically, the washing instructions are printed directly on the collar label, check it before your first wash. As a general rule: cold water, gentle cycle, hang to dry flat or on a wide hanger away from direct sunlight.

Wash After Every Session

No exceptions here either. Every training session means a full wash cycle before the next one. Bacteria multiply fast in damp, organic fabric. Leaving a sweaty gi in your bag overnight, or worse for a few days, is how you develop odours that don’t wash out easily, and how you bring skin infections like ringworm onto the mat.

Build the habit early: gi comes off, gi goes in the wash. Same day.

Wash Your Gi Alone

Do not throw your gi in with jeans, hoodies, or anything with metal hardware like zippers, buttons, snaps. Metal agitates against the pearl weave fabric during the wash cycle and accelerates wear. Over time it frays the weave and weakens the collar.

Your gi should be washed on its own, or with other soft training gear like rashguards and shorts. That’s it.

Dealing with Lingering Odours

Even with regular washing, gi fabric will eventually trap odour. It’s not a hygiene failure, it’s just the nature of organic fabric absorbing sweat over hundreds of sessions.

When you notice that the smell lingers even after washing, it’s time for an enzyme soak. Here’s how:

  1. Fill a tub or large sink with cold water
  2. Add an enzyme-based sport detergent or activewear-specific cleaner — these are formulated to break down the organic compounds that cause odour rather than just masking them
  3. Soak your gi for 30 to 60 minutes before running it through a normal cold wash cycle

Do this once a month or whenever you notice odour building up. It resets the fabric and extends the life of your gear significantly.

For day-to-day washing, skip the regular laundry detergent and use a detergent formulated for activewear. Standard detergents can leave residue in technical fabrics that actually traps odour over time rather than eliminating it.

Your Gear Is an Investment. Treat It Like One.

The Heritage BJJ Gi is built to last: 450 GSM pearl weave, pre-shrunk, designed for consistent fit session after session. But no gi survives neglect. A few minutes of proper care after every training session is the difference between gear that holds up for years and gear that falls apart in months.

Take care of your equipment. Your training partners will thank you.
